We would like to extend a heart-felt welcome to all Sun Hill families for the start of a new school year. This greeting is especially aimed at parents of Year 3 pupils and others that are new to the school. There’s always something a little special in the atmosphere come September; the freshness of the oversized uniforms and the sense that a new chapter in your child’s learning experience is beginning.
As many of you will be aware, Mr MacKenzie is currently unwell and unable to undertake the role of Headteacher. The thoughts of everyone in the school community are directed his way as we hope and wish that he makes a full recovery as soon as possible. The duration of Mr MacKenzie’s absence cannot be predicted and we therefore respectfully request that he and his family are granted privacy at this time. We will of course update parents as soon as anything changes or when further information becomes available.
I would like to take this opportunity to provide parents with some information about my role, brought about by the current circumstances, as Interim Headteacher.
Firstly, this is a part-time appointment for three days a week due to my ongoing commitments as Headteacher at Berrywood Primary School. However, in practice, it is likely that I will be on site in Sun Hill for at least some part of most days. It follows though that the majority of my work must be focused on the school’s improvement priorities. At Sun Hill this means strengthening teaching so that more pupils develop positive attitudes to learning and achieve the academic standards expected of their age. In order for this to happen, much of my time will be spent working in a coaching capacity alongside the teaching and support staff in classrooms.
It is my intention to be a visible presence and available for parents for the duration of my time here at Sun Hill. It just won’t be possible to attend all school functions in the way that would have been expected if my secondment were full time. Our deputy headteacher Mrs Reeve will be a very consistent presence and is also keen to be an available contact for parents, should the need to discuss matters with the school arise.
I am confident that the impact of coaching programme and other improvement initiatives will quickly bring about positive changes. Some of the development work required to re-establish Sun Hill as a high achieving school will take longer to embed and so my task is to lay solid foundations to ensure this happens. I am keen to share more details of the improvement drive in an open meeting for parents in the near future, please do look out for information about this in the weekly newsletters that will be coming your way.
Mr Reilly (Interim Headteacher)
|I would also like to extend a really warm welcome to all of our families and wonderful children. It has been fabulous to be able to catch up with so many of our youngsters today and find out a little bit about their summer break. I recognise there are challenges ahead for the school improvement journey, but I am really looking forward to the opportunity of working with Mr Reilly.
Mrs Emma Reeve (Deputy Headteacher)
CommunicationEffective communication between home and school is vital part of your child’s learning partnership. Sometimes you have important contextual information to pass on about your child, and we also welcome - and need to know – any questions or concerns you may have.
In most instances, an email to the class teacher is the best option. Class teachers will answer emails sent Mon – Fri within 48 hours. If the matter is more pressing then the best route maybe a conversation with the class teacher, either before or after school. If this is not possible then we recommend either a phone call or email to the school administration team.
The new school year offers the perfect opportunity for us to embed these routines in the interests of the pupils and their learning. Again, we would like to thank you in anticipation of your support of these approaches.
Nut Free SchoolAs many of you will be aware, the risks to health for children suffering severe nut allergies are very serious. Therefore, Sun Hill is now a nut free school. Please can parents and carers ensure that all snacks and packed lunches are nut free. We would like to thank you in anticipation of your support and cooperation.
School GovernorWe are very pleased to welcome Mrs Philippa Gordon to our Governing Body. Thank you to all of the parents who took the time to return the voting forms. The hard work of the governing body will resume very soon.
